Mutual Aid
Resources

Mutual Aid Resources
include the personnel and equipment available to Auburn from nearby communities in return for the same favor from Auburn Fire.

The Auburn Fire Department offers specialized resources to neighboring communities: Remote scene lighting and breathing air refill, aerial ladder truck, thermal imaging camera, gator and forestry-2 tanker. We respond with additional trucks and personnel to help our neighbors during larger incidents.

Equipment and specially trained personnel are likewise available to Auburn including dive team, med-flight helicopter, hazardous materials response team, heights rescue team, confined space rescue team, and more. Some are available from nearby fire departments, others from private organizations.

Fire chiefs work with each other to pre-plan mutual aid. New equipment is purchased with compatibility to nearby departments in mind. Fire dispatch centers know what resources are available from towns and private organizations.

There is an extensive plan to provide "backfill" coverage when local resources are dispatched away: Derry Fire will automatically respond to a fire call in Auburn while Auburn Fire is away helping the Manchester Fire Department. Auburn was one of 55 departments that responded to the Malden Mills fire in 1995, while backfill coverage was in turn provided to many of the responding departments in accordance with prearranged plans.
